iOS Tops Android During the Holidays

Apple iOS had a higher market share for mobile devices than Android in the US for the holidays. Android originally was ahead in the market than Apple, however Kantar Worldpanel ComTech stated that the iPhone was the top-selling smartphone during the holidays. A large contribution to the inrease in the market for Apple is caused by the many upgrades they have made to their products. iOS had a significant increase in share from 34.8% to 53.3% in share of smartphones sales between Novemeber 2011 and November 2012, while Android dropped from 52.8% to 41.9%. We would love to see what else Apple has in store for us this year.

  1. i think now that Samsung is being FORCED to provide REAL sales figures as part of its court battle with Apple there's going to be some rethinking. I have followed this whole marketshare thing for awhile. TOTALLY unscientific but I travel a great deal for work. Million miles on American for example and I ever since Samsung and others refuse to provide sales but only shipments and something they call activations. I've really looked at what people around me use. Be it the airport, the coffee shop, the local bars, and without a doubt the iPhone is the #1 handset bar none. Try it yourself!

  2. This is only for a 3 month period, and it includes tablet sales under the heading of smart phone sales. Android is still by far the largest in America and the world. Maybe we should include Windows 7 and Windows 8 computer sales figures for the WP7 and WP8 phones? Fair is fair.

    1. Sorry Jim.

The iPhone took 53% of smartphone sales, there were no tablets included. Android has run its course and now the iPhone is taking over. The only reason Android got a foothold in the US was the exclusivity agreement between Apple and AT&T. Now that the iPhone is on AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, people can get the phone they really want: iPhone. The iPhone 5 was only on sale for 9 weeks during the 3 months in question. During the those 9 weeks, the iPhone 5 had 70% market share.

BTW, Apple's share of tablets was 87% over the Christmas quarter.
